The Tamang Heritage Trail trek is a 9-day cultural and homestay trek in the Langtang region, close to the Tibet border. Stay with families in traditional Tamang villages such as Gatlang, Thuman and Briddim, soak in the natural Tatopani hot springs, and climb to the meadows of Nagthali (3,165 m) for views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and the mountains of Tibet.
This community-based trek directly supports local families and is graded easy to moderate, a good choice if you care about culture as much as mountains. It is reached by road from Kathmandu and is best from March–May and September–December. Transport, permit, guide, porters, homestays and all meals on the trek are included.
Quick answer: the Tamang Heritage Trail is a 9-day cultural trek from Kathmandu through Tamang villages in the Rasuwa district, with homestays, hot springs and mountain views. It reaches 3,165 m at Nagthali, costs from US$690 per person and suits beginners.
The Tamang are one of Nepal's largest ethnic groups, with a Tibetan Buddhist heritage, their own language and distinctive dress, music and dance. The trail was developed to share their culture with visitors and bring income to remote villages along the old trade route to Tibet. Evenings often include local food, butter tea and cultural performances.

It is an easy to moderate trek with 4–6 hours of walking a day and a maximum altitude just over 3,100 m. It suits beginners, families and older trekkers. The Langtang Valley can be added for a longer, higher trek.
Homestays are simple, with shared toilets and home-cooked food. Remove shoes indoors, accept tea with both hands and ask before taking photographs. Your guide will translate and help you connect with your hosts.
You should be comfortable walking 4–6 hours a day on village trails with some steep sections.
Mild days and cold nights, near freezing at Nagthali in winter. The monsoon (June–August) is wet.
The Langtang National Park permit is included.
Take out cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you set off: there are very few ATMs on the trail, and the ones that exist often don't work. Lodges charge a little for hot showers, charging and Wi-Fi, so a power bank saves money.
Bring a refillable bottle and either purification tablets or a filter. Lodges also sell boiled water, which is cheaper and better for the trail than bottled water.
Travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover trekking to 3,500 m, medical treatment and emergency helicopter evacuation. Please send us your policy details before departure.
Most visitors get a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport, or apply online before they fly. Your passport needs six months' validity, and bring a few passport photos for trekking permits.
